Highlights: Publication of consultant-level data

The NJR was one of the first ten national audits to publish consultant-level surgeon information, in partnership with specialist orthopaedic surgical associations

The NJR launched its Surgeon and Hospital Profile service on 1 July 2013, providing consultant-level information to patients and the public as part of a world-first NHS England initiative.  Since the launch of the service, the consultant outcomes programme has been confirmed for 2014 and is now part of the NHS Standard Contract.

For the first year of publication, it was agreed that the indicators for both surgeons and hospitals would include the number and types of hip and knee joint replacements carried out and 90-day mortality rates.

Work in 2013/14 has focused on extending the information shared on the profile service with the potential to include ankle, elbow and shoulder replacement data.

The information provided through the NJR Surgeon and Hospital Profile service (www.njrsurgeonhospitalprofile.org.uk) was delivered in partnership with the British Orthopaedic Society (BOA) and specialist societies the British Hip Society (BHS) and the British Society for Surgery of the Knee (BASK). In 2014 this relationship will continue and guidance will also be sought from the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS).

Work in 2013/14 has focused on extending the information shared on the profile service with the potential to include ankle, elbow and shoulder replacement data.  Further updates can be found at www.njrcentre.org.uk and a refresh of the current data as well as any new information will be published on 30 September 2014.
